Robert Baily was born in Southwark, Surrey on 8 August 1816, baptised 22 Dec. at St. Saviour, Southwark, son of John and Mary Ann Baily; his father was an ironmonger in High Street, Southwark. Robert who at the time was residing in Market Lavington, married Sarah Jane, daughter of Thomas Broxholm and and Mary Sheppard in Calne on 9 Dec. 1844. By 1851 the family have 4 children and are living with Sarah's mother and sister Ann in Church Street, Calne. Children were Caroline Ann, born 1846 in Market Lavington, Henry Robert, born 1847 in Calne, Sarah Jane, born 1848, Calne, and Mary Frances, born 1850 in Calne. Sarah, Robert's wife died on 28 Oct. 1851, age 31, at the Grocer's in Church Street. Robert remarried in the summer the following year to Sara Jane's sister Ann Broxholm at St. George, Hanover Square, London. By 1861 Robert's grocers were agents for the Royal Insurance Company, and by 1867 was agent for W. & A. Gilbey's wines and spirits. Ann Broxholm, Robert's second wife, died on 16 May 1869 at Church Street, aged 55. Robert's son Henry died on 10 July 1874 at his father's premises, aged 27. The grocer's premises in Church Street was up for lease or sale in the Devizes & Wiltshire Gazette - 31 Dec. 1885, page 2. It is likely that Robert died in London in 1890, death registered at St. George, Hanover Square, in the 3rd Quarter of 1890, age 74.
