Luke Bartlett

The Talbot Beer House - Easton Parade, Easton Road, Bristol

Luke Bartlett was born in Broadway, Somerset, in 1834, baptised on 17 August 1834, son of William Bartlett, a labourer (by 1841 a Tanner), and his wife Jane Taunton. Father William was also born in Broadway on 21 Oct.1795 and baptised at Broadway Independent Meeting on 5 June 1796, son of George & Elizabeth. Jane was from Bridport but born in Ilminster, she was blind by 1851, by this date young Luke was an apprentice Leather Currier. William and Jane had married in Broadway on 5 April 1821. A George Bartlett, likely William's younger brother, was landlord of the Bell Inn, Broadway in 1841, just a few doors from William's house.William and Jane also had children Mark, Harriett, Maria and Sarah.

By December, 1873 Luke had a Grocer's store on Easton Road, Bristol. and was advertising for a servant.

In the Western Daily Press - Tuesday 25 August 1874, page 1, Luke announces that he is a beer retailer residing at the Brickmakers' Arms, Easton Parade, in the Parish of St. Philip & Jacob, Bristol. He is giving notice that he is applying for a license, to sell by retail, beer, cider or wine, to be consumed either on or off a premises at Easton Parade, which he rents from one Samuel Smith, of St. Mark's Road, Lower Easton which is currently used as a beerhouse. Samuel Smith kept the beerhouse from around 1860.

By 1861 Luke was a qualified Leather Currier and had taken lodgings with one John Tyler at Hanover Place, St. Philips, Bristol. There was another lodger of a similar age in the same house, a Sarah, from Bristol.

Luke had married Sarah Jane Tyler, daughter of John, on 28 May 1860 at Bristol Holy Trinity, St. Philip's. By 1871 the family were living at the Grocer's shop at 1 Easton Parade, they had sons: William John (1861), Frederick George (1862) and Albert Thomas (1866). Luke was still a Currier, and it seems that Sarah took care of the Grocery business.

Luke was at the Talbot, at Easton Parade by June 1875, it is likely that the Talbot was actually the former Bricklayers' Arms and Luke changed the name upon getting the new license. The Bricklayer's disappears and the Talbot appears in the records around this time. The Talbot was certainly there by 10 Feb. 1875.

From July 1878-1883 Luke was the landlord of the White Lion Inn at the corner of Silver Street, and Bridewell Street, in the Haymarket area in Bristol, for which he received the license for from Robert C. Smart. After Luke moved to the White Lion the Talbot passed to Henry Heaven, and in 1885 to Henry's widow Annie Maria. The White Lion had an adjoining brewery, known as the White Lion Brewery, Bridewell Street.

By 1891 Luke had retired and was living at 2 Elton Road, Horfield, next door to his son Frederick's family. By 1911 Sarah had died and Luke was living with son William at 25 Nottingham Road, Bishopston. He died here on 12 November 1917, leaving his estate to his three sons.
