Brewers

From the  Bristol Times and Mirror - Wednesday 23 April 1902 page 3: "THE BRISTOL PURE BEER COMPANY. LIMITED, A MODEL BREWERY. Many people will have noticed in Victoria Street a new freestone building, with an attractive sign outside. It is the head-quarters of the Bristol Pure Beer Company, Limited, the chief proprietors being Mr. J. W. Lovibond, of Salisbury, and Mr. E. Gordon Grinlington (manager). The object in establishing the brewery is to supply absolutely pure beer—that is, beer brewed only from barley malt, hops, yeast, and water. The process employed at the brewery is a secret one, and the result of nearly 50 years' careful study of the question by Mr. Lovibond. The difficulty which has hitherto been experienced by brewers is to preserve the beer without the use of antiseptics, but the Bristol Pure Beer Company claimed to have solved the problem. A visit to the premises shows that the promoters have paid particular attention to cleanliness, and in many respects it is a model brewery, and in some particulars it is constructed on new principles.  The walls of many of the rooms are composed of dazzling white enamelled tiles, and the floors are laid with blocks of concrete. It will thus be seen that a spray of water is all that is required to keep the place sweet and clean. Any acid smell which might come from the grains is prevented by a special machine, which dries the used malt, and converts it into valuable fodder for horses and cattle. The building is complete in every particular, the roomy cellars and offices being especially constructed by Messrs. W. Cowlin and Sons. The firm hope to do a large bottle trade, and the department allotted to this, like the others, is lighted with electricity. The cleaning of the bottles is carried out by means of a water motor. Brewing has been in operation for about two months, and the result has been been most encouraging. The beer is clear as Sherry, agreeable to the palate, and, no substitutes being used, the full flavour of the malt is retained. The water obtained from the Mendips is excellent few the brewing of beer, and the firm have made arrangements with the Waterworks Company for a special direct supply. In order that the secret of the process may not be divulged, all the brewing is carried out personally by Mr. Grinlington, the manager. The company guarantee the beer as pure, and they have only one quality. The price of the beer is 1s. per gallon in casks of 4½ gallons and upward: 2s. 6d. for a dozen pint bottles, and ls. 1d. for four quart bottles. The company also produce stout on the same system of purity, and in both their commodities they are looking forward to a big trade in Bristol and the district. Those who have given up beer for fear of its being adulterated will have no such misgiving with regard to the productions of the Bristol Pure Beer Company, Limited, for each cask and bottle is stamped with a guarantee of its purity. The advertisement of the company will be found in another column."

The company did not last for long, the trade was likely not as good as anticipated. By December 1904 auctioneers had been given instructions to sell the 6-quarter brewery, complete with offices and new Adlams & Sons' plant and utensils, on 19 January 1905. The company was officially wound up and struck off the register by May 1907.
