Arthur J. Morris

Arthur Jeffery Morris was born in 3 Paul Street, Westbury upon Trym in 1848, baptised at St. James, Bristol on 22 Sept. 1848, son of John Leaker Morris, a Tea Dealer, and Mary Anne. In the 1871 census Arthur was a wine merchant living at Prospect House, Clifton. In the 1881 census Arthur was a visitor at the house of Alfred Tuckett, a retired brickmaker, at Murtle Hall, Hung Road, Westbury. Arthur married Emily Louisa Fisher at St. Michael's, Gloucester, on 2 January 1886, he was living at Keynsham at the time. Emily Louisa was the daughter of builder Henry Fisher (deceased). In 1886 Arthur lived at Grove Villa, 2 Southfield Road, Cotham where his son Arthur Geoffrey Morris was born on 25 Nov. Arthur Junior was baptised 26 July 1892 at Rodborough, Gloucester.

Arthur's business premises was that of the late Rankin & Co. that was situated between 12 Small Street and Bell Lane which consisted of two adjoining buildings with a frontage of 29ft to Small Street and 44ft to Bell Lane on the first building, and a warehouse and underground cellarage that had frontage of 44ft 6in to Bell Lane and a depth of 25ft 6in. Arthur took the license of the Wine Vaults at Small Street on 21 February 1871.

Arthur Jeffery Morris died at his home, Grove Villa, on 24 March 1892 leaving a considerable estate. Emily Louisa went on to marry bank cashier Edward Liddow Miller on 7 Dec. 1907 at Clifton All Saints and they were living at 38 Alma Road, Clifton in 1911.

Arthur Jeffery Morris was buried in the family vault at Arnos Vale Cemetery on Tues. 29th March 1892.

As a Lieutenant in the R.A.M.C. Arthur Geoffrey married Vera Kate Moss, of Redland Road, Durdham Down, on 22 July 1916, at Westbury parish church.

After Arthur Jeffery's death the company became a Limited company and traded from 51 Broad Street from around 1906 until at least 1920, the lease (likely 21 year) on the premises expired in 1927. Their long-term employee Richard Lovell died in June 1902.
