John Page

Wine Hooper, Distiller, Brandy Merchant and Sugar Refiner

John Page was born in Bristol on 25 Feb.1745. He married Elizabeth Marchant on 21 Feb. 1774 at St. James, Bristol. He was possibly the John Page, a hooper living at Hallier's Lane in Sketchley's 1775 directory. He had been apprenticed to Rudall Betham, Wine-hooper of Bristol on 7 Nov. 1760 and William Smith, Hooper of Bristol on 28 June 1768.

From the Bath Chronicle and Weekly Gazette - Thursday 3 March 1774: "Monday se 'nnight was married, Mr. John Page, jun. wine-hooper, of Bristol, to Miss Marchant, daughter of Mr. Edward Marchant, of this city."

Son Edward Marchant Page was baptised at the Bristol and Somerset Quarterly Meeting of the Society of Friends on 4 Nov. 1774. The family were living at Wilder Street at the time. Father John was a distiller in St. Thomas by 19 March 1781 when son Henry was baptised at the same place. Henry became Rev. Henry Page, baptist minister of Rose Hill, Worcs.

John was a distiller when he apprenticed his son John Page to Master Linen Draper William Bazley on 26 Sept. 1785.

John was chosen as Sheriff of Bristol in 1793 and Alderman for the Parish of St. James, Bristol, at the beginning of January 1808 and remained at this post until his death.

John's wife Elizabeth died at her home in King's Square on the morning of Tues. 10th March 1818.

The Gazette: Bristol, May 31st 1797 Issue 14014 p.502:

"THIS is to give Notice, that the Business of Sugar- Refining, carried on by us the undersigned William Pember, John Page, and Edward Marchant Page, in the City of Bristol, under the Firm of Pember, Page, and Son, is this Day dissolved by mutual Consent: All Persons that are indebted to the said Partnership are requested to pay the same to the said John Page, at the Sugar-House in Wilder Street; and those, who have any Demands on the said Partnership will apply to him, that the same may be discharged.

Edward Marchant Page." This would have been the "Old Refinery" that later became the Aerated Water Manufactory of Carter & Co.

John died on 24 Feb. 1821 aged 74. He was interred at the Old Baptist burial ground in Redcross Street.
