Russell & Co.

Wholesale & Family Wine & Spirit Merchants, Redland, Bristol.

Fred Hedgeland Smith was born in Weston-super-Mare is 1878, son of a father of the same name and wife Rose Shackell. In 1901 the family were living at 15 Kensington Park, Knowle, Bristol, where Fred was a clerk in the wine trade, and his father was now a retired Colonial Broker. Fred married Daisy Selina Price in Bristol in 1904. Daisy was born in Bristol at 15 Frogmore St. baptised at St. Augustine the Less, 12 Aug. 1882, daughter of stone mason Edward Colston Price and Selina Charles. Fred managed the Russell & Co. business, likely for Isabella Russell, who was the widow of Wine & Spirit Merchant Granby Russell. Granby Russell died in 1905 and his business at the Mall, Clifton was disposed of to E. S. Baber & Co. in 1907. His widow Isabella, however, remained a Wine & Spirit Merchant until at least 1939. It is likely that the owner of Russell & Co. was Isabella and the business was managed for her by Fred.

Fred died in London in 1918 at 37 Deronda Road, Herne Hill, and was buried 29 October at Norwood Cemetery, Lambeth age 40.
