E. SHUTE (Shute, Edwards & Shute)

Distiller, Wine & Spirit Merchant

Edwin Shute was born around 1779 or 1780,  possibly in Exeter, Devon. Two brothers were baptised at George's Presbyterian Bow Meeting House, Exeter on 17 Dec. 1780: Edwin & Henry, two sons of John Shute and Martha (Newcomen?). Worcester Journal - Thursday 12 September 1816 p.3, reports Edwin Shute married Rosina, eldest daughter of William Davy, Esq. of Germantown, Pennsylvania and his wife Susannah, at Kidderminster on 4 Sept. 1816. Edwin was a distiller by trade. He was later part of the firm of Shute, Edwards & Shute who appear in the 1822 & 1825 directories at 24 Redcliff Hill, Bristol. Edwin was a Presbyterian non-conformist and attended the Lewin's Mead Chapel in Bristol.

Edwin and Rosina had children: John Shute, 9 Oct. 1817; Rosina Shute, 22 April 1819; Caroline Watson Shute, 20 October 1820; Martha Susan Shute, 12 Dec. 1821 and Edwin Shute, 27 May 1826.

Edwin Snr. died in May 1833 aged 52 and was buried in the family vault at Lewin's Mead burial ground, Brunswick Square, Bristol.

John Shute Esq., Edwin's father, died In Duke Street, Bath at the the end of April 1828 aged 78, he was buried in the family vault at Lewin's Mead on 3 May 1828.

There was another Shute in Bristol, Samuel Shute, a merchant who married Miss Gwynn, daughter of the late Captain Richard Gwynn of the Royal Navy, in Nov. 1785. Also a Samuel Shute Esq. of Frenchay marries Miss Ricketts of London, April 1798. There is also Shute & Co. Chemists in Bristol from 1808. This probably became Shute, Richardson, & Co. druggists of Redcliff Street & Redcliff Back. Business effects sold off at the end of May 1816.

On 8 Sep. 1810 there appears in the Bristol Mirror p. 2. the following notice: MR. JOHN SHUTE, of No. 56, Park Street, a Partner with the undersigned, having thought proper clandestinely to take away, and secrete the only Articles of Co-partnership between them, and in numerous other instances, to conduct himself unjustly, and with oppression; the undersigned, by the advise of his counsel, and to dissolve such a ruinous connection, hath submitted to the Act of the Law.- He assures his Friends, that so soon as he has settled his affairs, he shall continue his business as a Distiller, in the same Premises, on his own account; and he respectfully solicits a continuance of their favour.

TIMOTHY CASSIN

Timothy Cassin was a rectifier, dealer and chapman, Holden's directory of 1805-7 places him at Redcliff Hill, Shute responded by refuting the accusation, saying the Articles referred to were, and always had been, in a sealed parcel in the hands of their bankers Messrs Ames, Bright & Co, and always available to Cassin. As a result, on 18th Oct. 1810: "Notice is hereby given, that the Partnership between us, the undersigned, TOMOTHY CASSIN and JOHN SHUTE, as Rectifiers and Dealers in Foreign and British Spirits, carried on under the Firm of TIMOTHY CASSIN and Co. is dissolved. All Debts owing to us, in respect thereof, are to be paid or remitted to the said JOHN SHUTE, who is duly authorized to receive the same, and who is to discharge all demands on that Partnership. Witness our Hands,

TOMOTHY CASSIN
JOHN SHUTE"
