A. J. Chuter - Chemist


    Arthur James Chuter was born on 2nd December 1904 in Sherborne, Dorset to Herbert William Chuter (1875-1943), an organist and Professor of Music, and Olive Emily Boys (1870-1957). Arthur was also an organist. Arthur was already a qualified pharmacist by February 1928 when he travelled to Kobe, Japan from his then Father's home at Bingham Villas, Cirencester. He was in Japan with an H. J. Griffiths, 3 Kaigan Dori, 1 Chome, Kobe, returning to the UK on 26th April 1932 from Yokohama. In 1932 and 33 he played cricket for Cirencester. Arthur is already a pharmacist and optician in 1928 and according to the Chemist and Druggist magazine for 7th Oct. 1933 he then had just taken over the business of Mr. H. Long, Chemist and Druggist, at the West End Pharmacy.

    He married Dorothy Margaret Williams at St. Mary Magdalene, Addiscombe, Surrey, on 4th Sept. 1935. They had 2 children, Roger & Rowena.  The company became a Limited Private Company in August, 1954 with a capital of £4000. Arthur later retired to Ridings Mead, Chippenham, he died in Chippenham in 1984.
