William Davis

    William Davis was born on South Bristol around 1779, he married Flower Sheppard (bapt. 12th Apr. 1793), daughter of Thomas Sheppard & Amelia Brookman of Pucklechurch, Gloucs., the marriage took place in Grittleton, Wilts. on 17th Jun 1819 by license, William was resident in Chippenham at the time. Flower's parents had moved to Grittleton by this date. The couple had children William Davis (bapt. Chippenham 10th Aug. 1820), Ann Elizabeth (bapt. Chippenham 19th Feb. 1821), Jane Julia Davis (bapt. 11th Oct. 1824), Eliza Amelia Davis (bapt. Chippenham 10th Apr. 1826). William is listed in Pigot's 1830 directory as a grocer & draper, and the 1851 census lists him as a retired draper living at Albion Place. William Davis died, in Chippenham, on November 19th 1855 aged 76. Jane went on to marry Philip Dowling Culliford (1810-1873) on 21st Oct. 1866 in Chippenham. Philip was the Innkeeper of the Rose & Crown.
