Herbert Edward Corner
was born in 1876 in Dodington, Somerset, the son of William Chave Corner
(1814-1879) and Mary Elizabeth Trist (1834-1906). In 1891 he was living
with his widowed mother and her friend, a Brewer and Maltster from
Londonderry called Frederick Wm. Anderson in Taunton St. James.
At some point he must have joined the Wiltshire
Imperial Yeomanry because he appears at their Ball in Chippenham on
Wednesday 13th Jan. 1904. It is likely that he took over the mineral water
works from Francis Holland that year; Holland was still trading in 1903.
He must have been a keen football enthusiast as he was added to the list
of Vice Presidents of Chippenham Town Football Club at their annual
meeting of Tuesday 31st July 1906. He is listed as a Mineral Water
Manufacturer in the High Street in Kelly's directory for 1907.

Herbert's mother, Mary Elizabeth, died in Chippenham in 1906
aged 71.
In the April/June quarter of 1916 Herbert married Cassie Clare Newby
(1877-1924) in Brighton, Sussex. They had a residence at 5 Stockwell Park
Crescent, Brixton, Surrey. Herbert had joined the 4th Dragoon Guards and
was part of the West African Frontier Force. He must have been wounded
because he came home from the port of Seccondee (now Secondi) in Ghana
aboard the SS Karina to Liverpool on 19th Jan. 1917.
Herbert unfortunately didn't survive very long after
his return because he died at Mount Dorč Hospital, Bournemouth on the 30th
October 1917. He is buried in Bournemouth East Cemetery. His gravestone
is there.
